Pitch: Storytelling is split up into two halves. In "Fiction", a college teenager allows herself to be abused by her writing professor, in order to get inspiration for her creative writing class. In "Non-fiction", Toby Oxman is an underachiever trying to be a documentary filmmaker. For his first project, Toby focuses on the Livingston family and their son Scooby, a lonely, bisexual high school student with dreams of being famous.
Here's the trailer:
Storytelling was written and directed by the dark, slightly disturbed Todd Solondz. Christine Vachon produced this, as well as Solondz's previous film Happiness. The film was released by Fine Line Features in November 2001.
Many people already know the story about Solondz versus the MPAA when it came to a sex scene in part one of the film. But Solondz was also fighting with the producers. The original cut of Storytelling was two and a half hours, rated NC-17, and featured three stories instead of two. Apparently, the producers wanted the film cut for both a shorter running time and an R rating. When the film debuted at Cannes, it received a tepid reception with many boos. Solondz blamed the producers for the reaction, complaining about the entire hour cut. This hour has still not been released in theaters or DVD.
